Siem Reap Angkor Trip Cambodia Travel Angkor Wat.

Tours to Angkor Wat always includes Siem Reap, they opens up the view into a different world.

Angkor tours today are no adventure tours anymore as it has been two hundred years and more before. Often they start at Bangkok Airport or from a Bangkok bus terminal. The bus brings the people to the Thai Cambodian border at Aranyaprathet, you move through customs and immigration without problems and at the other side at Cambodia try to find another bus to Siem Reap. Faster is a taxi and best is to get some people together to share the taxi to keep costs down.

More comfortable could be to take the airplane from Bangkok to Siem Reap, but be aware only one airline has the monopole on this routing and they use it to milk the traveler, this is Bangkok Air.

It is very recommended to do a Angkor hotel before you leave since there are always plenty of tourists around. Since this place became also a trip destination with Chinese people they come in by several airplane loads

every day. Actually the taxi option is probably the best overall since it brings a good quick insight about the countryside and people, its marginally but interesting. Arriving there opens great panoramas into the past is still very present and lively there, since nothing has really changed the last couple of hundred years except some technology were imported.

Angkor trip transportation is quite organized, either using the bus from Bangkok bus terminal or from the airport. A excellent bus leaves everyday from Suvarnabhumi at 7am to the border at Aranyaprathet, at the weekend (Saturday-Sunday) there is one more bus in the afternoon around 2pm. The airport is a good start for the bus since this way it is possible to avoid Bangkok traffic by using the airport rail link from downtown, at the counter they try to sell you a sim card for Cambodia and say this works in Cambodia which is a lie. If you want to buy a card for your mobile only buy it in Cambodia.

Cambodian Thai Border Angkor Trip
Cambodian Thai Border Siem Reap Angkor Trip.

At the Cambodian Thai border

it is already visible that this is a micro cosmos different to other countries, it somehow reminds to Myanmar. But this will chance slowly, until a few years ago the road to Siem Reap was real bad, its much better now (2012) but to drive is very dangerous since nobody cares about traffic rules, actually there are non, tours to Angkor Wat also show other subjects in the country.

In old Khmer,

the name Angkor means "the city" or "the capital". Here, on a plain 200 square kilometers in extent in north-eastern Cambodia, between the Kulen plateau and the

Tonle Sap ("Great Lake"), a dozen Khmer rulers of the ninth to the twelfth centuries built seven capitals containing many temples but the best preserved is Angkor Wat. An Angkor trip reveals, there are not only old Buddha statues to see at Angkor Wat, plenty of Buddha statues with a more modern touch are also around. Some of Angkor is hidden in the jungle, where they are even more inaccessible because of the presence of the Khmer Rouge, who after holding power from 1975 to 1978 and killing upwards of a million Cambodians, took refuge in this region near the Thai border.

Cambodian temples today are the remains of Khmer Art and their ancient capitals, for only the gods had the right to stone or brick buildings, but even the remains of Angkor temples we see today tell what a great civilization, named Khmer, was around in that part of Asia, a Angkor trip help a bit to understand the past.

The Khmer palaces and dwellings were built of wood, and they have since disappeared without trace, only in the 20. century structures at Siem Reap and Angkor were built in durable brick and concrete construction. Actually this is the in all south east Asia countries were only sacral buildings in the past were built with bricks all other with wood, which disappeared after fire which happen continuously over the centuries.

Khmer Art Angkor temple.

Khmer art is somehow very good workmanship especially considering the technology available at the time the Khmer art was created. It is always impressive to see the very detailed work done, this is not only with Apsaras but also with with paintings and statues, read more. A few hundreds years ago almost all present day south east Asia was under Khmer rule, even near Kanchanaburi in west Thailand at the Myanmar Thailand border is a very old temple Khmer beside the road to the three pagoda pass.

A Angkor trip

is great but there is always the crowd around, other places in Cambodia in general don't have as many tourist and air pollution from the cars, tuk-tuk, motorbikes and trucks  The region badly needs revenue from tourism, but there is also a risk that it may suffer from it. There is some trash piling beside of some roads but in general the environment in the cities is quite clean, currently the biggest problem concerning infrastructure are still the bad roads which very often are just dirt tracks. Only the few main roads such as from the border to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Sihanoukville and the main roads to the east of the country are in good conditions.

Cambodia Tours Angkor Wat
Cambodia tours Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is one of Asia's top tourist destination, at the high season somewhere between 4000 and 5000 visitors come to Angkor everyday since the temples and ruins are easily accessible by flights to Siem Reap by various airlines, actually Siem Reap Airport is located between Angkor and Siem Reap. Also easily accessible by bus from Bangkok to the border and further to Siem Reap via Poipet. Probably the best tour is a helicopter tour

The  Angkor Archeological Park, includes five of the ancient temple towns Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Prah Khan, is only 6.3km from Siem Reap.

Temples of the god-kings - Angkor Cambodia

Late in the eighth century, an ambitious Cambodian prince convinced his suffering people that he was a deity. Proclaiming himself as universal ruler--or god-king Jayavarman II declared his people's independence from Java. His newly created Khmer Empire would rule Southeast Asia for about 600 years. At least 38 more god-kings followed his reign during that was known as the Angkor period (802-1432). Each god-king had a sacred "temple-mountain" built as a symbol of power and as a final resting place. The massive stone temples covered an area of 75 square miles. The most striking structure we see today at Angkor Cambodia is Angkor Wat, built by

King Suryavarman II in the 12th century. That Wat, or temple, has five majestic towers that symbolize the dwelling place of the Hindu gods. Today, tourist journey to northern Cambodia and marvel at what remains of the temples of the god-kings.

The Bayon, in the walled city of Angkor Thom,

has a series of large sandstone towers, each with four sides carved with smiling faces representing an all-seeing and all-knowing Buddha. The distinctive curl at each end of the lips is known as "the smile of Angkor."

On the south entryway to Angkor Thom, one side of a bridge is lined with stone demons with round eyes and puffy cheeks. The other side of the bridge is lined with statues of gods. Angkor sandstone sculptures in the form of elephants line a portion of the main square of Angkor Thom known as the Elephant Terrace.

A Buddhist monk stands by the gnarled roots of a strangler fig tree that has invaded the temple of Ta Prohm. Modern dancers adorn themselves with traditional headdresses and jewels while kneeling with increase in the west gallery of Angkor Wat. The ornate central tower of Angkor Wat stands for Mount Meru, the mystical center of the universe in Hindu mythology. Many of Angkor's temples have statues and intricate carvings, known as bas-reliefs, that depict both Hindu and Buddhist symbols.

Angkor Cambodia,  was created  in the 12. th. century under a great Khmer King his name was Jayavarman VII ( 1181 - 1219). today somehow a Disneyland with a real use,  the marvelous temples bring a income for the people in that area and far beyond. This palaces, temples, sculptures, relief's and bas relief's are so overwhelming it's hard to say anything, maybe the best would be to stay quiet, keep the mouth shut .... and make pictures, that's what it is, Siem Reap Angkor is overwhelming somehow like the old pagoda and temple city Bagan Myanmar.

A orgy of expressive pictures in 3 dimension, bas relief. Today tourists climb through the stone landscape, monks stroll around, whole groups from wedding parties visit the Angkor Wat monuments and some kids and others try to get some money from the tourists. For them all tourists are millionaires, so let them in this believe and spray some money, for the visitor its a little tip, for the kids and others its a substantial amount they can use for things or services they need.
